Conventional wisdom was wrong on Titans
By Matt Wilson | Filed Under Miscellaneous
The prevailing thought on this week’s Titans-Pittsburgh game was this: Without Albert Haynesworth and Kyle Vanden Bosch, the Titans were cooked.
The Titans hadn’t been playing as well as they had when they were terrorizing the NFL earlier this season. The Steelers looked lately like they were gearing up for a sixth Super Bowl title.
But we didn’t count on a couple of rookie defensive linemen: Jason Jones and William Hayes. Jones, a tackle, and Hayes, an end, filled in big-time for Haynesworth and Vanden Bosch. Jones had 3.5 sacks and three forced fumbles and Hayes added a sack and a forced fumble.
In the preseason against the Rams, Jones looked like a beast. Like all rookies, he’s had his ups and downs this season. But he couldn’t have picked a bigger time for his best game of the season.
Hayes, meanwhile, has been a favorite of mine all season. Basically, just because of his nickname “Big Play Hayes.” I kept hoping he would come on because that’s too good of a nickname to not use in a headline. (I guess I’m pretty shallow.) Now I got my wish.
• The other thing that seemed apparent was that the Titans were none too happy about the abundance of Steeler fans and Terrible Towels in the stands. It shouldn’t be too surprising. Steelers fans have a habit of making opposing stadiums their own.
In the then-Tennessee Oilers’ only season in Memphis, Steelers fans outnumbered “Oilers fans” so badly it contributed to Bud Adams deciding to go ahead and play games in Nashville even though the new stadium wasn’t ready. Earlier this season, Steelers fans essentially took over the Redskins’ stadium.
Still, it obviously burned up the Titans. Chris Johnson took out a towel on his touchdown run and mocked Steeler fans by waving it. Then LenDale White took out a Terrible Towel and stomped on it. You’ll hear about this again from the national media, methinks.
