Weekend wrap

By Matt Wilson | Filed Under Miscellaneous

If you’re one of the many who can barely say ‘Baltimore Ravens’ without a level of disgust in your voice, then this week should be a lot of fun.

Yes, once again the Titans will face the yep, pretty much hated Ravens in a key playoff battle. It got lost in the afterglow of a division title season, but remember the Titans came very close to losing to the purple-clad devils in Baltimore earlier this season. YouTube Preview Image

I said it earlier this season, I’ll say it again: Make sure Al Del Greco doesn’t show up or it’ll get ugly.

• Am I the only one who did a double take when I saw Matt Millen giving studio analysis this weekend? Really? I mean, you could give me complete football control over an NFL franchise for four years and I KNOW I wouldn’t produce a team as bad as the one Millen put out there this year in Detroit.

• Vanderbilt finished this football season with a winning record. I still believe it’s the first step in an upward trend that could see the Commodore program reach new heights. They’re recruiting the right kind of players and they’re recruiting better players than ever before.

Now they have a bowl victory to show that things are looking up. The next few years could be pretty fun on West End.

• In East Tennessee, new UT coach Lane Kiffin keeps working on what looks like an All-Star staff. Or at least and All-Star recruiting staff. Kiffin brought in Ed Orgeron, who was known as a recruiting whiz at USC and as a head coach at Ole Miss. He’ll go out on the road with Kiffin’s father, Monte Kiffin (UT’s new defensive coordinator) starting this week trying to nail down some blue-chippers.

Word also got out this weekend that UT was trying to hire the University of Georgia’s recruiting guru, Rodney Garner. Garner did a tour of duty in Knoxville before, bringing in three big stars of the Vols’ national title team — Jamal Lewis, Deon Grant and Cosey Coleman.

Looks like Kiffin’s serious about going toe-to-toe in recruiting with the other SEC powers.
