UT coach Steve Spurrier? Not this time.
By Matt Wilson | Filed Under Miscellaneous
Several years ago, when Steve Spurrier was the bane of UT’s existence, Vols fans love to absolutely hate the Florida coach. But there was always an unspoken fascination with him. After all, he was a high school star in Tennessee and likely would have gone to UT had the Vol program run a modern-style offense when he came out of high school.
When Phillip Fulmer had his first rough year in 2002, some disgruntled Vols fans even wondered if Spurrier should come coach at UT. At the time, it seemed like an absolutely absurd idea. Now we know that maybe it wasn’t that crazy. When told of Fulmer’s firing on Monday, Spurrier stunningly said that he would have accepted the Tennessee job after his NFL coaching career had the job been open.
Of course, his tongue could have been planted firmly in his cheek when he said it. In any event, he said he wouldn’t be interested in the UT job this go-around.
• Ken Mink, a 73-year-old at Roane State in Harriman, Tenn., scored two points in a recent game. Mink, a Knoxville resident, played college hoops 52 years ago and got the bug to play again last year. Hey, good for him. All I know is that I’m so out of shape that he could probably school me big time right now.
