A travesty of a mockery of a sham

By Matt Wilson | Filed Under Miscellaneous

With all the O.J. Mayo news lately, I find I agree with this column more than ever.

I love college sports. There’s nothing else like them. But this NBA minimum age requirement thing has become a disaster. The one-and-done players make a mockery of the term “student-athlete.”

It’s always been an open secret that many college baseball players who expect to be drafted after their junior seasons barely enter a classroom the second semester. You think any of the recent one-and-done players in college basketball even see a classroom after fall semester? Come on, it’s a joke.

The NBA’s minimum age rule should be scrapped. Heck, if a kid is good enough, sign him to an NBA developmental contract, put him in a team-run development system and make sure he continues to get some kind of education? I mean, Miley Cyrus is making a billion dollars a year doing what she does. Is anybody pressuring her to sit in a classroom for eight hours a day?

Would it make sense to make her go to a college — that can make money off of her performances — as long as she pretended to be interested in Intro to Philosophy for a semester?

No. So why’s it any different for pro athletes?

• Sometimes it helps to have some perspective. Here in the States, we hear about Pete Rose’s gambling habits or Roger Clemens’ many “romantic conquests” and get all riled up.

Take a look at sports in Britain. There’s a bookmaker on every corner and there’s no problem with pro soccer players gambling, even gambling on other soccer games! Now Manchester United star Wayne Rooney — who once ran up quite a gambling debt — is headed to Vegas, baby!

Oh, and he’s also admitted to visiting prostitutes. Should be a fun bachelor party!
